Job Description

LOCATION:          Management Services – Johnstown CSD

SCHEDULE:        Monday-Friday @ 7.5 hours per day

BASIC FUNCTION:

These duties involve responsibility for the preparation and cooking of a variety of food. A Cook usually has responsibility for one part of a meal, such as the meat course, or vegetables or pastries and desserts. In a small kitchen a cook may supervise the cooking of an entire meal and in some cases may have charge of the entire kitchen operation. Supervision is exercised over Assistant Cooks and/or Food Service Helpers. Does related work as required.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Prepares and cooks meat, fish, poultry, soups, vegetables, cereals, desserts, salads and other food.
2. Bakes cakes, pies, rolls and a variety of other pastries.
3. Cuts, cleans and dresses meat, fish and poultry.
4. Supervises the proper storing of food.
5. Supervises the work of assistants in the preparation of food, and the cleaning of tables, kitchen utensils, stoves and kitchen.
6. Keeps simple related records.
7. Good knowledge of the methods of preparing, cooking and baking food in large quantities.
8. Good knowledge of modern cooking utensils, appliances and equipment.
9. Good knowledge of cleaning methods and the use of cleaning materials and equipment.
10. Ability to plan with a view to economy and efficiency in the use of supplies, equipment and food.
11. Ability to follow oral and written directions and recipes.
12. Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Job Qualifications

1. One year of experience in large scale cooking.

The selected applicant will be subject to a fingerprint supported criminal history background check in accordance with SAVE Legislation effective July 1, 2001.

Vacancies are filled by a certified list provided by Albany County Civil Service. Should no certified list be available, candidates appointed to this position will be serving in a provisional appointment in accordance with New York State Civil Service Law. The candidate must successfully complete a competitive examination and be eligible for appointment in accordance with Civil Service Law and the Civil Service Rules for Albany County to obtain a permanent appointment.

Application Procedure

SALARY will be in accordance with contract language and prorated to amount of service rendered.  
BOCES employee salary commensurate with experience and in accordance with contract language.
