Job Description

LOCATION:          Management Services – Niskayuna Bus Garage @ 1301 Hillside Road, Niskayuna, NY 12309        

BASIC FUNCTION:

The incumbent supervises subordinate mechanics, helpers and/or servicemen in the maintenance and repair of a wide variety of automotive and construction equipment in a large departmental garage.  General assignments are received in the form of oral and written instructions, or in the form of complaints regarding the operation of specific vehicles.  Work is performed with considerable independence and an employee in this class is expected to determine the extent of repair work justified due to age and condition of the equipment.  Work progress, quality and completion is checked by the Transportation Supervisor through occasional inspections of work.  Does related work as required.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Lays out, assigns, supervises, and inspects the work of skilled mechanics  in general overhaul and repair of automobiles, light and heavy trucks, gasoline and diesel engines, tractors, power shovels, graders, snow plows, and other motor equipment in a large departmental garage servicing over 75 pieces of major motor equipment of varying types and makes.
2. Diagnoses the causes of equipment failure and malfunctioning.
3. Writes descriptions of work to be performed on equipment.
4. Supervises and instructs mechanics in replacement and repair of transmissions, differentials, and rear axle assemblies.
5. Supervises the installation and repair of hydraulic controls and the removal, tearing down, repair, and replacement of all types of gasoline and diesel engines.
6. Performs highly skilled work in the repair and adjustment of equipment when difficult or unusual problems are encountered.
7. Requisitions parts, gas, oil, and grease.
8. Keeps a record of the type of parts needed on each piece of equipment that may be serviced in the field.
9. Checks time of employees supervised.
10. Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, and tools of the automotive mechanic trade.
11. Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
12. Thorough knowledge of the principles of operation of gasoline and diesel engines and of mechanical repair on automobile and construction equipment.
13. Skill in the use and care of tools, machinery, and equipment used in the mechanics' trade.
    Skill in locating and adjusting defects in motor equipment.
14. Ability to plan organize and supervise the work of and instruct skilled mechanics in work assignments.
15. Ability to schedule plan and organize the work of a group of skilled mechanics.
16. Ability to keep shop records.
17. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
18. Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Job Qualifications

1. Four (4) years of experience at the journey level in the automotive mechanic trade, including one (1) year working at the supervisory level. 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

Eligibility for and possession of an appropriate class New York State drivers’ license at the time of appointment.

The selected applicant will be subject to a fingerprint supported criminal history background check in accordance with SAVE Legislation effective July 1, 2001.

Vacancies are filled by certified list provided by Albany County Civil Service. Should no certified list be available, candidates appointed to this position will be serving in a provisional appointment in accordance with New York State Civil Service Law. The candidate must successfully complete a competitive examination and be eligible for appointment in accordance with Civil Service Law and the Civil Service Rules for Albany County to obtain a permanent appointment.
