Job Description

LOCATION:                        Management Services – Niskayuna CSD Bus Garage @ 1301 Hillside Road

BASIC FUNCTION:  
This is skilled work involving responsibility for the complete overhaul and repair of a variety of automotive equipment and for the safe transportation of school children.  The work is performed under general supervision in accordance with established practices and procedures.  Does related work as required.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Performs skilled operations in the repair and overhaul of gasoline and diesel motor equipment including trucks, tractors, and buses.
  2. Repairs or replaces motors, pumps, fuel pumps, generators, carburetors and shock absorbers.
  3. Repairs ignition systems, transmissions, brake systems, clutches and front and rear axles.
  4. Adjusts steering mechanism and aligns wheels.
  5. Operates a school bus on a regular schedule or on special occasions.
  6. Tunes engines and sets the timing.
  7. Greases vehicles and changes oil and oil filters.
  8. Thorough knowledge of standard automotive repair methods and of the terminology and tools of the trade.
  9. Good knowledge of driving safety practices and traffic laws and regulations.
  10. Demonstrated ability to make difficult repairs to heavy automotive and other mechanical equipment.
  11. Ability to work from plans and specifications and to follow rough draft sketches and oral instructions.
  12. Good motor and hand and eye coordination.
  13. Manual dexterity.
  14. Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Job Qualifications

One (1) year of experience as a skilled automotive repairman.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Candidates must be at least 21 years of age and possess a valid Class C or higher driver’s license with P endorsement, issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, at the time of appointment. Effective October 1, 2005, school bus drivers as defined by Section 142 of the NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law must possess an S endorsement on their vehicle license.

The selected applicant will be subject to a fingerprint supported criminal history background check in accordance with SAVE Legislation effective July 1, 2001.

Vacancies are filled by certified list provided by Albany County Civil Service. Should no certified list be available, candidates appointed to this position will be serving in a provisional appointment in accordance with New York State Civil Service Law. The candidate must successfully complete a competitive examination and be eligible for appointment in accordance with Civil Service Law and the Civil Service Rules for Albany County to obtain a permanent appointment.
