Job Description

LOCATION:          Career & Technical Education – Albany Campus

BASIC FUNCTION:

The health careers program is a two-year course designed to instruct high school students to gain valuable hands-on experience in area healthcare and direct support facilities. Students will earn certification as a home health aide (HHA) and nurse assistant (NA). They will also earn American Heart Association BLS/CPR and First Aid certifications. This course will enable students to work as a home health aide, nurse assistant, rehab aide, hospice companion to name a few. Students can enter the job market that pays them a living wage; or to continue their education at the post-secondary level. To be involved in developing partnership programs with local businesses, colleges and universities.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Instruct students in total patient care through classroom preparation and clinical training on how to provide valuable skills in conjunction with professional nurses in a home health care setting.
2. The course will range from health-related tasks such as measuring and recording vital signs, height and weight; infection control practices; safety & mobility; maternal & baby care; to doing laundry, personal care and housekeeping.
3. In addition to the above courses, the instructor will teach patient care & comfort measures; principles of nutrition; body systems, common disorders and related care procedures; and response to basic emergencies.
4. During the second year, prepare students to take the nurse assistant examination (Prometric) that qualifies Nurse Assistant upon successful completion of the exam to work in any nursing home in New York State.
5. Students will complete 16 hours of supervised practical training in a lab or in an assisted living setting and the remaining hours in a nursing facility.
6. The classroom instructor will be responsible for developing in each student an awareness and understanding of the basic skills and knowledge associated with the nursing assistant field.
7. Evaluate student progress and instruct students in theory as per curriculum.
8. The instructor will be responsible for developing and evaluating student progress, instilling safe work habits and stressing the importance of reliability, competence, loyalty, and dependability in clinical areas as well.
9. In addition to the classroom, the instructor will be responsible for supervising and evaluating student progress in the clinical areas.
10. The instructor will work within the facilities to provide the clinical portion of the health care program.

Job Qualifications

1. Valid NYS Registered Nurse License and CPR certified in BLS
2. Worked as a Registered Nurse for at least one (1) year in a home health setting and one (1) year in a nursing home.
3. At least two (2) years experience caring for the elderly and/or chronically ill.
4. Should meet New York State teaching certification requirements for the Transitional A certificate. 5. The candidate will have demonstrated the ability to provide sound instruction, ability to work in a team environment, work collaboratively with staff and administration. 
6. Must possess good written and verbal skills.

Special Requirement: Applicant must have received primary vaccination for COVID19 and required booster, and annual influenza vaccine.
