LOCATION:          Special Education & Career & Technical Education Buildings

BASIC FUNCTION:

Employees in this class have immediate responsibility for the direction and supervision of school nursing personnel within all BOCES programs engaged in a variety of school nursing activities.  Work also includes responsibility for assisting the school administrator in planning the overall school nursing program.  Employees confer with the school administrator in the formulation of work programs but exercise considerable professional judgment in executing the functions of BOCES school nurse offices and in the training, mentorship and oversight of nursing personnel.  Work is reviewed by the school administrator through oral discussion and review of written reports. Does related work as required.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Supervises the work of subordinates through oversight of school nurse office functions, review of case histories and written reports including a thorough understanding of students with 1:1 services, and by accompanying nurses on field visits and serving as an advisor on complex nursing situations.
  2. Supports the evaluation process by providing input and feedback to the appropriate BOCES administrator on the competencies of assigned nursing staff.
  3. Ensures compliance with appropriate laws, regulations, policies and procedures related to the school nurse functions across all BOCES programs.
  4. Provides coverage in nursing offices or classrooms, when necessary.
  5. Serves as mentor to new members of nursing staff.
  6. Serves as primary advisor to nursing staff on medication management.
  7. Participates in new student intakes across all BOCES programs, including the preparation and review of student medical files for compliance and validity.
  8. Communicates with families and/or home districts, or students of BOCES adult programs, about student physicals and immunizations and then thoroughly tracks and maintains records of such conversations.
  9. Escalates potential issues of school nursing situations to BOCES administration, when appropriate.
  10. Reviews medical standing orders and verifies regulatory compliance across all BOCES locations and programs, communicating needs for revision to the BOCES medical director liaison as necessary.
  11. Supervises and participates in the maintenance of records and the preparation of statistical and activity reports relating to school nursing activities and programs.
  12. Responsible for annual reporting of student immunizations across all BOCES programs.
  13. May maintain master schedule to ensure coverage of school nursing assignments across all BOCES locations and programs.
  14. May be responsible for ordering and maintaining stock medication (e.g. Albuterol, EpiPen, Narcan) at each BOCES location.
  15. May plan and deliver orientation for new members of nursing staff through formal and informal training exercises.
  16. May organize and facilitate required annual and bi-annual trainings, including but not limited to Narcan, First Aid, EpiPens, AED and CPR.
  17. May provide coordination and support of student medical needs during the extended school year program.
  18. May assist in preparation of required federal, state and local reports in computerized systems.
  19. May conduct quarterly review of Medicaid files maintained by subordinate nursing staff.
  20. May create and deliver lesson plans to secondary students focused on various personal hygiene practices and bathroom routines.
  21. Performs related work as required.
  22. Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of professional nursing.
  23. Thorough knowledge of the laws, regulations, policies and procedures related to school nursing.
  24. Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of school nursing and of their application to specific diseases and social conditions.
  25. Thorough knowledge of resources available to persons in need of health services.
  26. Good knowledge of the effects of illness on individuals.
  27. Good knowledge of current developments in the field of school nursing.
  28. Ability to train, instruct and supervise nurses in the principles of school nursing.
  29. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students and their families.
  30. Ability to track and maintain records.
  31. Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Job Qualifications
  1. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing and four (4) years of experience in nursing, which shall have included two (2) years of experience in a supervisory capacity; OR,
  2. Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate’s degree in Nursing and six (6) years of experience in nursing, which shall have included two (2) years of experience in a supervisory capacity.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Possess and maintain a license as a registered nurse (RN) as issued by New York State.
  • Possession of a CPR Certification at the time of appointment and throughout employment.

The selected applicant will be subject to a fingerprint-supported criminal history background check in accordance with SAVE Legislation effective July 1, 2001.
