Job Description

LOCATION:          Special Education – Maywood Academy

BASIC FUNCTION:

Serve in support of the Special Education School Principal.  Comply with and administer the appropriate laws, regulations, policies and procedures affecting the Special Education Division.  Other duties as assigned.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provide administrative and curriculum support to the Principal to ensure a safe, high-quality learning environment aligned with NYS Next Generation Learning Standards, P-12 Learning Standards, and Individual Educational Plan (IEP) requirements.
  2. Assist in all aspects of daily school operations, including the implementation of policies, programs, and curriculum activities that support individualized student development.
  3. Ensure compliance with IDEA and other relevant regulations while advocating for best practices in special education.
  4. Participate in Committee on Special Education (CSE) meetings and support teachers with IEP development.
  5. Evaluate teachers and teaching assistants following BOCES guidelines.
  6. Address student discipline issues through a restorative and trauma-informed lens, ensuring follow through on referrals with teachers, parents, and students to support positive behavioral growth and accountability.
  7. Champion inclusive practices that promote dignity, autonomy, and self-advocacy for all students.
  8. Lead and support professional development to enhance instructional practices and staff growth.
  9. Serve as acting Principal in the Principal’s absence, overseeing school operations to ensure continuity and stability.

 

Job Qualifications
  1. New York State certification in School Building Leader or School District Administrator required.
  2. Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university, or one accredited by New York State to grant degrees, with a Master’s Degree in educational leadership or a related field.
  3. Valid NYS teaching certificate or NYS certification in a pupil personnel services title.
  4. Programmatic experience in special education settings and knowledge of Part 200 regulations required.
  5. Ability to collaborate effectively with teachers, students, family members, school district administrators and community providers.
  6. Strong team-building and leadership skills.
  7. Skilled in using data-driven decision-making to improve instruction, student outcomes, and school operations.
  8. Passion for promoting an equitable and engaging learning environment for all students.
  9. Excellent organizational, verbal, and written communication skills.

The selected applicant will be subject to a fingerprint supported criminal history background check in accordance with SAVE Legislation effective July 1, 2001.
